Restaurant Review: Elizabeth.

“One of the many things we love about Stratford is the vibrant restaurant scene,” says John, who with his wife, Amanda, owns Avery House B&B, a member-property on DiscoverStratford. The 2025 season will be the couple’s 13th year running the B&B.

"For a city of its size, Stratford boasts an astonishing array of top-notch restaurants," Amanda explains.  She attributes this delicious phenomenon to a unique combination of factors: the renowned Stratford Chefs School graduating a steady stream of talented culinary artists, the abundance of fresh, local produce from the surrounding countryside, and the discerning palates of theatre-goers who visit the city each year.  It all adds up to a rich culinary landscape.

"Our guests are always asking for restaurant recommendations," John says, "and Elizabeth. is consistently one of our top suggestions. It's a must-try for any Stratford visitor."  Elizabeth., which opened in 2022, occupies the space formerly home to the Stratford landmark diner, Features of Stratford (which has moved to another great location, right downtown). Chef Brian Clarke, who had long admired this location, has transformed it into a Stratford hot spot.  (Yes, it is spelled "Elizabeth." with the dot at the end.  Ask your server to tell you the fun and touching reason why).

John and Amanda recently celebrated a belated birthday at Elizabeth. and they're still savouring the memories.  "We love the small plates concept," Amanda said. "It's perfect for sharing and sampling a variety of dishes. We almost always order the scallops &ndash they're sautéed and served over this amazing,  buttery corn succotash.  The menu is constantly changing, reflecting the season and the chef's inspiration."  On their recent visit, they started with a decadent plate of rich pork belly (sourced from a nearby farm) with crispy Brussels sprouts and tangy pickled cabbage.  John's highlight?  "The potato pavé. I'm a potato junky, and these were extraordinary. Imagine stacks of thinly sliced potatoes, roasted and fried to crispy-crunchy perfection. These golden-brown beauties were served with their homemade whipped hummus. Just&hellipwow."  Amanda raved about the Black Cod, accompanied by fingerling potatoes and a flavorful broth.
