Flour Power
A Day Trip to Arva
Looking for a charming day trip from Stratford? Head southwest for about 40 minutes to the quaint village of Arva, Ontario. Nestled just outside of London, Arva is home to a truly special piece of Canadian history: the Arva Flour Mills.
Established over 205 years ago, these mills boast the title of one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Canada, rivaling even the legendary Molson Breweries. As one of the world's oldest water-powered flour mills, it's a testament to both ingenuity and enduring craftsmanship.
In 2021, the mill faced the threat of redevelopment, much to the dismay of the local community. Thankfully, Mark and Joelle stepped in, purchasing the mill and breathing new life into this historic landmark.
The couple's journey wasn't without its challenges. They faced obstacles like rising wheat prices and the time it took to gain traction for their vision. However, their creativity and dedication prevailed.
Today, Arva Flour Mills is thriving. They've introduced a successful line of flour-based mixes, expanded their gluten-free offerings, and earned organic certification. They've also brought home the historic Red River hot cereal brand, a fitting partnership for a nearly century-old brand and a two-century-old mill.
You can experience the magic of Arva Flour Mills firsthand. Visit the mill itself and indulge in their delicious creations at the Red River Café, which opened in early 2024. Don't miss their famous scones, made with their own whole spelt flour, or the delightful lemon Pavlova.
