Artist Spotlight: Jay Smith Photographer
Stratford is known for its vibrant arts scene, and it's no surprise that it has attracted talented individuals like Jay Smith. A photographer with a diverse portfolio, Jay's work showcases a range of styles and subjects, from the serene beauty of nature to the gritty glamour of urban landscapes.
Originally from Goderich, Jay was drawn to Stratford by its thriving arts community and decided to make it his home. While he first picked up photography a decade ago, he recently deepened his commitment and exploration of this art form.
Jay's approach to photography emphasizes the journey as much as the destination. "The memories and adventures I have while chasing down an image can sometimes be just as powerful as the pictures themselves," he shares. This adventurous spirit is evident in his pursuit of elusive wildlife, including bears and moose (two subjects he is still searching for... careffully).
Jay's captivating nature shots are beautifully complemented by his focus on urban landscapes, particularly Detroit and Buffalo. He explains, "They are/were rust belt cities down on their luck about 20 years ago. I was fascinated by the abandonment, architecture, history and soul of these cities that are too often overlooked. I decided to focus on them more than cities up in Canada, because I felt they needed my support and good vibes, and they have returned the favor to me. Although, things have changed a lot since then and both have undergone renaissances of their own."
