2025 Festival Season: Anne Of Green Gables

By DiscoverStratford.com - Published April 13, 2025

Peggy and Bill are back with their latest insights into the Stratford Festival's 2025 season.

They write: "In these unpredictable times, some stories offer timeless comfort. Could there be a better escape than the enduring charm of Anne of Green Gables? This season brings a fresh perspective with a world premiere adaptation by the acclaimed Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, who also takes the directorial reins at the Stratford Festival.

For many, the heartwarming and humorous journey of the orphaned Anne Shirley on Prince Edward Island is a cherished memory, and this new production offers a wonderful opportunity to share that magic with a new generation. Whether you discovered Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic 1908 novel, or perhaps the beloved CBC/Radio-Canada miniseries starring Megan Follows, Anne's story has touched so many lives, both young and old.

This narrative has truly blossomed beyond the page. Translated into numerous languages and adapted for film, stage, radio, and television countless times, Anne of Green Gables will get its latest expression at the Festival's Avon Theatre.

Leading the cast is Caroline Toal, making her Stratford debut in the iconic role of Anne. Her previous credits include work with Drayton Entertainment, The Howland Company, and Theatre Aquarius. Festival veteran Tim Campbell, now in his 13th season, will play Mathew Cuthbert, while Sarah Dodd, another familiar face at Stratford, portrays Marilla Cuthbert. They join a talented ensemble, adding their names to the impressive list of actors who have brought these characters to life over the years, including Megan Follows, Jonathan Crombie, Jackie Burroughs, Sarah Polley, and Charmion King.

At its heart, Anne of Green Gables celebrates family, belonging, the boundless power of imagination, the significance of home, and the joy of a happy conclusion &ndash a perfect theatrical experience for audiences of all ages."

Thanks, Peggy and Bill, for another wonderful essay.
